Your email address is often the first thing people see. A professional email tells employers, clients, and colleagues: "I take myself seriously."
A bad one whispers, "I haven't updated this since high school."
Let's fix that. Today.
A good professional email follows this simple formula:
firstname@ or firstname. lastname@ or initial. lastname@ — followed by a trusted domain like gmail.com or outlook.com
Examples that work:
jane.smith@gmail.com
mike.brown@outlook.com

Examples that don't:
cutiepie88@yahoo.com
johnnyboy123@hotmail.com

Step-by-Step: Create Your New Email (10 Minutes Max)

Step 3: Choose your email address
Type your desired name. If "john.smith" is taken, try the following:
john.smith92
j.smith.cityname
johnsmith. work
jsmith. initial
Test tip: Say your email out loud. If you have to spell it three times, it's too complicated.
Step 4: Create a strong password
Use a phrase + numbers + a symbol. Example: "BlueBagel$42"
Write it down somewhere safe. Don't lose it.
Step 5: Enter your recovery info
Add a phone number or backup email. This is how you get back in if you forget your password.
Step 6: Agree and create
Click "I agree" or "Next" until you see your new inbox. Congratulations — you now look professional.
What About a Custom Domain? (Like name@yourwebsite.com)
That's the gold standard—but not necessary for most beginners. It costs money (around $12/year for a domain) and requires technical setup.
Stick with Gmail for now. It's free, trusted, and works perfectly.
How to Switch Your Old Accounts to Your New Email
You don't need to delete your old email. Just update important accounts:
Bank and bills
Social media
Job sites (LinkedIn, Indeed)
Online shopping (Amazon, eBay)
Leave your old email active for a few months. Forward messages if you want.
One More Thing: Your Email Signature
A professional email signature goes at the bottom of every message. Keep it simple:
Jane Smith
[Your title or just "Beginner Digital Learner"]
[Your phone number, only if comfortable]
No quotes, no emojis, no giant logos.
Watch Out for These Common Mistakes
Mistake 1: Using numbers that mean something (birth year, age)—it's fine, but not ideal.
