Claude AI by Anthropic — Everything You Need to Know (And Why It Might Be Better Than ChatGPT For You)

You have probably heard of ChatGPT. You might have even tried it.

Claude — your thoughtful, patient AI companion

But there is another AI assistant that millions of people are quietly switching to — and chances are you have not heard much about it yet.

It is called Claude. And after reading this guide, you will understand exactly what Claude is, what makes it different, and whether it is the right AI tool for you.

What is Claude?

Claude is an AI assistant created by a company called Anthropic. Just like ChatGPT, you can have a conversation with Claude by typing questions or requests—and it types back helpful, detailed, thoughtful responses.

Think of Claude as a brilliant, patient, knowledgeable assistant available 24 hours a day on any device with an internet connection. You can ask it almost anything, give it tasks to complete, or have it help you think through problems—and it responds in natural, human language that is genuinely easy to understand.

Claude is available at claude.ai, and the basic version is completely free to use.

Who made Claude?

Claude was created by Anthropic—a company founded in 2021 by former members of OpenAI, the organisation that created ChatGPT.

Anthropic was founded with a specific focus on AI safety — meaning they are deeply committed to making sure their AI is honest, helpful, and harmless. That focus on safety and trustworthiness is baked into everything Claude does.

The name Claude has no special meaning—it is simply a name the team chose for their AI assistant.

What can Claude actually do?

This is where things get really exciting — especially if you are an adult learning digital skills or someone who wants to use AI to make their daily life and work easier.

“Claude is like having a brilliant, patient assistant who never rushes you, never judges you, and explains things as many times as you need.”

Here is everything Claude can help you with:

Writing and communication

Claude is exceptional at helping with writing. Whether you need a professional email, a business report, a social media post, a cover letter, or a simple message to a colleague—Claude can write it, improve it, or completely rewrite it in seconds.

You do not need to be a good writer to use Claude. You just describe what you need, and Claude does the heavy lifting. Even if you type in broken English, Claude understands what you mean and produces something polished and professional.

Learning and explaining

“Explain this as if I were a complete beginner—and it will do exactly that. Every single time, without sighing, without rushing, without judgment.”

Claude is one of the most patient teachers you will ever encounter. Ask it to explain anything — how to use Excel, what a PDF is, how the internet works, what IELTS requires — and it will explain it clearly, at exactly the level you need, without ever making you feel stupid for asking.

Tell Claude, "Explain this as if I were a complete beginner," and it will do exactly that. Every single time. Without sighing, without rushing, without judgment.

Research and summarising

Have a long document, email, or article that you do not have time to read fully? Paste it into Claude and ask it to summarise the key points in plain language. What used to take 30 minutes takes 30 seconds.

Claude can also research topics, compare options, and help you make decisions by presenting information clearly and objectively.

Planning and organising

Tell Claude what you need to get done and ask it to help you plan. It can create weekly schedules, project plans, to-do lists, and step-by-step guides for any task you describe.

Many of my adult students use Claude to plan their working week, organise their business tasks, and create simple systems that save them hours every month.

Editing and proofreading

Paste anything you have written—an email, a report, a message, or a job application—and ask Claude to check it for errors, improve the flow, or make it sound more professional. It will do all of this while keeping your original meaning and your personal voice intact.

Translation and language help

Claude can translate between languages, help non-native English speakers write more naturally, explain grammar rules in simple terms, and even help you practice English conversation. For my English students, Claude is a wonderful practice tool between our sessions.

Coding and technology help

If you work with technology or want to learn, Claude can explain computer concepts simply, help you understand error messages, write basic code, and guide you through technical tasks step by step.

Creative work

Claude can write stories, brainstorm ideas, create outlines, suggest names for businesses, write social media captions, and help with any creative project you are working on.

What makes Claude different from ChatGPT?

This is the question everyone asks. Here is an honest comparison:

Claude tends to give longer, more detailed, more nuanced responses. Where ChatGPT might give you a quick answer, Claude often gives you a thorough one that considers multiple angles.

Claude is widely praised for feeling more conversational and natural — like talking to a thoughtful, well-read friend rather than a search engine.

Claude has a very large context window—meaning it can read and remember much longer documents and conversations than many other AI tools. This makes it particularly powerful for longer tasks like reviewing a full document or having an extended back-and-forth conversation.

Claude is designed with a strong focus on honesty. It will tell you when it does not know something rather than making something up. It will push back politely if it thinks you are mistaken. It tries to be genuinely helpful rather than just telling you what you want to hear.

Claude is not better than ChatGPT at everything — and ChatGPT is not better than Claude at everything. They are different tools with different strengths. Many people—including myself—use both depending on the task.

How do you access Claude?

Getting started with Claude is simple:

Go to claude.ai on any browser. Click "Sign up" and create a free account using your email address or Google account. Once inside, type your first message in the box at the bottom of the screen and press Enter.

That is it. You are now having a conversation with one of the most advanced AI systems ever created—completely free.

The free version of Claude is genuinely powerful and more than enough for most everyday tasks. There is also a paid version called Claude Pro, which gives you more usage, faster responses, and access to the most advanced versions of Claude.

What versions of Claude exist?

Anthropic releases different versions of Claude for different needs:

Claude Haiku is the fastest and lightest version—great for quick, simple tasks.

Claude Sonnet is the middle tier — a powerful balance of speed and capability that most people use for everyday tasks. This is the version available on the free plan.

Claude Opus is the most powerful and capable version—designed for the most complex, detailed, and demanding tasks.

Anthropic regularly updates and improves these versions, so Claude is constantly getting smarter and more capable.

Is Claude safe to use?

Yes — and safety is actually one of Anthropic's defining values as a company.

Claude is designed to be honest, harmless, and helpful. It will not help with dangerous or harmful requests. It is transparent about being an AI. It tries to give balanced, accurate information and will acknowledge uncertainty rather than pretending to know things it does not.

For everyday tasks — writing, learning, planning, researching — Claude is completely safe and enormously useful.

As with any AI tool, you should never share sensitive personal information like passwords, bank details, or identification numbers in a chat with Claude or any other AI assistant.

Can Claude help me learn digital skills?

Absolutely—and this is one of my favorite things about Claude as a digital skills coach.

I regularly recommend Claude to my adult students as a learning companion between our sessions. Here is how my students use it:

They ask Claude to explain a computer concept they did not fully understand in our lesson. They ask it to give them practice exercises for Excel or Word. They paste documents they have written and ask Claude to improve them. They use it to practice English conversation in a completely judgment-free space. They ask it to explain things in their own language first, then in English.

Claude is endlessly patient, never makes you feel embarrassed, and is available at any hour of the day or night. For adult learners who feel behind with technology, Claude is genuinely transformative.

How to have your first conversation with Claude—5 things to try today

Open Claude at claude.ai and try these five things right now:

Type: "Hello, Claude. What can you help me with?" — just to see how it responds and get a feel for its personality.

Type: "Explain what artificial intelligence is as if I were a complete beginner with no tech background." — Notice how clearly and patiently it explains.

Type: "Help me write a professional email to my manager asking for a day off next Friday." — Watch it produce something polished in seconds.

Paste something you have written—anything at all—and type, "Can you improve this and make it sound more professional?"

Type: "What are 5 ways I could use AI to save time in my daily work or personal life?" — let it give you personalised ideas.

By the time you finish those five, you will understand exactly what Claude can do—and you will probably have a list of ten more things you want to try.

Claude, ChatGPT, DeepSeek—which AI should you use?

My honest recommendation for beginners is this: start with one AI tool, learn it well, and then explore others once it feels familiar.

If you want to start with Claude, go to claude.ai.
If you want to start with ChatGPT, go to chat.openai.com.
If you want to explore DeepSeek, go to deepseek.com.

All three have free versions. All three are genuinely useful. The best one is simply the one you actually use.

And if you would like a patient, experienced guide to walk you through any of these AI tools—showing you exactly how to use them for your specific life and work, in plain language with no jargon and no pressure—that is exactly what I offer in my AI and digital skills coaching sessions.

Ready to learn AI tools with a real coach?

You do not have to figure this out alone.

In my one-on-one coaching sessions, I teach adults exactly how to use Claude, ChatGPT, Canva, Google Workspace, and other modern digital tools—at your pace, in plain language, with no assumptions about what you already know.

Many of my students come to me feeling completely overwhelmed by technology. They leave feeling genuinely capable and confident—not because I am a miracle worker, but because the right guidance makes everything simpler than it looks.
